How do you heat your home and keep Heating prices low?

With natural gas prices rocketing sky high - what are you doing to keep your heating bills at a minimal? Any unique ideas to heat up your place without giving up your arm this coming winter?

Currently we have an air-forced duct system in place. I really hate it, the heat does not distribute evenly throughout the house and despite of having a so-called humidifier installed
into the system, we still have excessive dry air.

I really liked those old water based - radiator heaters, it minimized static and really kept homes warm -- whatever happen to those?

Anyway, give me ideas on how to maintain a nice warm house this winter, I do not want to make this a major project -- keep it nice and simple.

I also have two non-working fireplaces in this old house, I don't have the slightest idea how to use / maintain one. Currently there are sealed off, and if I get it going ... will it even be safe? will it be worth it ? Please share your ideas with me -- I am desperate! ~thanks

Best Answer –
The house I own had no heating system other than a blower box on the fireplace when I bought it. Several thousand dollars later I had central heat with a heat pump in place. I thought all would be great, until I got my first heating bill. If I use that thing I can expect heating bills to range from $300-600 a month in the winter.

SOOOoo I have become something of an obsessive about tricks and alternative heating sources.

1. You would not believe how much outside air leaks into your house. Go around when it's cold and windy and put your hand over door cracks, keyholes in the knobs, window sills, even along the floor by the wall. If you can't plaster over the leak, tape it. All that cold air coming in just drives up your costs.

2. A $4 flannel blanket from Walmart works wonders when hung over doorways that are not regularly used. I also hang them over windows as a cheap alternative to heavy drapery.

3. Those fireplaces? Forget 'em. They'll suck out more heat than they put in. The only time a fireplace really does good is if you are either right in front of it, or you have a blower insert that forces the heat out into the house instead of sending it all up the chimney.

4. I can't say enough about those $1.25 draft dodgers that you stick on the base of your doors. Just peel the backing and stick them on. Any hardware store or Walmart will have them.

5. Insulation. When is the last time you checked it in your attic? You lose a LOT of heat through the ceiling, so a few hundred bucks worth of blown in insulation can save you thousands over a few years. You need at least 6 inches of insulation up there (I put in a foot!), so if it's all compressed down to a few inches, it's time to resupply.

Look around, you'll find one of those radiators. I finally realized the heat pump was very efficient until the outside temp dropped below 45, then the meter nearly spun off it's base. So, I hooked up a free standing, vent free, propane fueled fireplace that will make the place toasty warm when the temp drops into the 30s or below.

Avoid the temptation to get little electric space heaters. The energy they use up to make that little bit of heat is NOT worth it.

Planning Ahead To Beat the High Cost of Heating Your Home

It is now November. The kids are going back to school. The football season has begun. The nights have gotten a bit chillier, and the days are not as hot. The price of energy to heat your home is up there It is time for you to see how much money you might save.

You should begin by conducting an energy audit of your home or apartment to help detect waste. If you are a homeowner, this will gauge the efficiency of your current heating system. Your utility company may offer free or low-cost energy audits, or you can conduct your own. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) offers instructions over the internet.. The home "walk-through" may help you spot needed maintenance or problems that, if fixed, could save you money. For example:

Check your attic, attic stairway, attached garage walls and basement to make sure your home is insulated to DOE-recommended levels for your area. When inspecting and buying home insulation products, look for the R-value. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power.

Wrap your hot water heater in an insulating jacket.
Schedule an annual tune-up for your heat pump, furnace or boiler. Your utility company may provide this service.

Hire a professional heating contractor to seal and insulate leaky ducts, and to ensure that the airflow distribution system serving your heating equipment is operating at peak efficiency.

Clean or replace filters on forced-air furnaces, seal flues in fireplaces you don't use, install drapes or some other covering on windows, and seal holes around plumbing and heating pipes.

Install a programmable thermostat that will automatically lower nighttime temperatures. You can keep just as warm sleeping under a good insulating blanket or quilt as you can by running the heating plant full blast at night.

Check caulking and weather stripping, and make repairs where necessary.

Close your foundation vents in the winter if there's a crawl space under your home.

Close the doors to rooms that you don't use.

Prune shrubs that may block airflow to your heat pump.

Install ceiling fans. The air circulation promotes heating efficiency in the winter.

When buying a new furnace, boiler, heat pump, water heater, or other home appliance, consider a high-efficiency model. Although some energy efficient appliances may cost more to buy than other models, their lower operating costs may save you money in the long run. Use the black and yellow EnergyGuide labels to compare the energy use or efficiency of models. You can find these US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) required EnergyGuide labels on most major appliances. The labels provide useful information about products' energy use or efficiency and estimated annual operating costs. In addition, the EnergyStar logo will help you identify high-efficiency appliances.

You should shop around for the best prices on oil - and gas, if you live in an area that lets you choose your natural gas provider. Ask your selected utility or oil company about a budget billing plan to protect against sudden or unexpected price increases. Your provider takes the amount of energy you use during one year and divides it into equal monthly payments. At the end of the season, you pay any outstanding balance or your provider credits any overpayment to your next monthly bill.

If you're on a fixed income and have trouble paying your utility bills, contact your utility company. They, or your state or local government, may have energy assistance plans to help you pay your heating bills.

The Heating Scam Artists Are Out Don't Get Burned

When energy prices rise, so does advertising for a host of energy-saving products and services - including some that are just plain bogus. The FTC recently settled charges against marketers who claimed their "liquid siding" product had a significant R-value and would yield dramatic reductions in consumers' utility costs. Although good maintenance such as caulking and painting can reduce air leaks in older homes, consumers should be wary of coating or paint sellers that promise their product will perform like insulation or will significantly reduce utility bills.

Sellers offering other devices, gadgets, and energy-saving products also promise drastic reductions in home heating costs or extreme energy savings. Read energy-saving claims carefully and, if possible, get independent information about product performance. Avoid unsolicited door-to-door sales calls and high pressure sales pitches from contractors offering furnaces, windows, roofing, and other home improvement projects.

To make sure that a contractor is licensed and reputable: Ask friends and neighbors for referrals; ask the contractor for customer references; and check out potential contractors with the Better Business Bureau, state and local consumer protection officials, and your state licensing agency. The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule gives you three business days to cancel a contract if you sign it in your home or at a location other than the contractor's permanent place of business.

In Conclusion

The last two winters in the North American region have been milder than usual. This is not an indication that this coming winter will follow suit. We could have a season filled with high winds and below normal temperatures. This means only one thing - high wind chill factors. That means only one thing - high heating bills

Now is a good month to begin getting ready for the coming season. Be wise - Winterize.

Creative Home Remodeling Ideas For Garages

Some people have no use for the double garage portion of their home. Their homes are equipped with protection from the wind on both sides and the distance is relatively short to the back door should a downpour occur at any moment. The homeowners have some creative home remodeling ideas for garages that they want to use to give them better use of the space that a automobile would typically use.

Many exercise enthusiasts can envision a home gym in the place where the automobile used to be parked. They can see bright and cheery colors being painted on the wall to encourage them to exercise to a higher degree of fitness. They can also see their exercise equipment spread out with enough room to extend legs and stretch all parts of the body without having to worry about ever running into their exercise partner.

Other people have a passion for plants and need space to grow them to share with their best friends and their little business that they operate on the internet. The creative home remodeling projects would completely remove the garage from the home and create an indoor living environment that is perfect for plants to grow in. The remodeled space would have plant lights hung by the ceilings and tables for potting the plants and others for them to sit on and grow.

Many garages can be converted to be warehouses for home businesses. The creative home remodeling projects that they plan will include a shipping department that is a step away from where the inventory is stored on shelves. A computer system can be installed in a built-in cabinet to keep dust and dirt from damaging the electronic equipment. This space will reap the homeowner great rewards on their income tax as a space devoted to business and not to be used solely to house an automobile.

Some people consider garages to be living spaces that have not been finished. Even if the garage doors are never removed, homeowners are finding creative ways to disguise them. Some homeowners paint the doors with floral arrays and arches and turn the space into a Grecian garden spot complete with hot tub and sauna. These are delightful places for couples to spend quite evenings and enjoy the evening sunset white seated in comforting waters of a brand new Jacuzzi tub.
Some couples settle for half the space in the garage to do the things that they want to. The man of the house will usually use one side to store the riding lawnmower, hoses and various tools that he uses to remodel the home with. There can be a divider wall installed in these spaces to hide the clutter from guests, and the other side can be used for creative interests such as painting or quilting projects and a large mixture of other things that are of interest to the opposite sex.

Budget Decorating Ideas

Everyone wants to have a home that draws "oohs" and "aahs" out of their company. Unfortunately, furnishing an apartment or house is becoming extremely expensive. There are some furniture companies that charge an arm and a leg for their products, and others that sell furniture that feels, and looks, cheap. How is a person to decorate their home beautifully when things have become so expensive?

There are ways to decorate a room, or an entire home, on a budget. The first tip is to not look at purchasing everything at once. Who says you need to buy a bed frame, two nightstands, a bureau and an armoire all at the same time? Instead, focus on what you need for the "now". A bed frame is generally the first piece of furniture that is necessary for a home, followed by a bureau. After some time, when you've gotten a chance to save up a little more money, you can work on purchasing the nightstands and the armoire.

Who says all of your furniture has to match exactly? There is no rule or law that says that your dining room table and your chairs have to be a perfect match. You can often save money, in fact, when you do not purchase a matching set, and instead buy them separate. For instance, you may find a set of six chairs on sale, and a table on sale. As long as the table and chairs look good together, why not put them together? This way you've saved a bundle and are able to create a statement in your dining room.

Shop around! If you see something that you like in one of those expensive furniture magazines, start looking around. Chances are very high that you will find something that looks extremely similar for much less. Most furniture designs are not exclusive to the designer, so there is often a piece of furniture available somewhere else that will make you just as happy as the expensive one would have, except this time, your wallet will be happy too!

Remember that there are no rules when it comes to decorating. Yes, interior designers go to school for years learning how to put rooms together properly, but all that really matters is if you like the room. After all, you are the one that will be living in it, so you need to be comfortable and happy with it.

Easy 15 Minute Fixes!

Source: realsimple.com

Easy 15 Minute Fixes!Believe it or not, in the time you spend just thinking about getting the sticky window unstuck, dusting the glass chandelier, or tamping down a curled corner of wallpaper, you could actually get the job done. Whatever your household bugbear, chances are it's not such a beastly problem after all.

With a little know-how and a few readily available materials, your 15-minute fix could begin right now. So get up off that couch (with its sad, sagging cushions) and turn a little bit of downtime into an upgrade. Today the chandelier; tomorrow -- who knows?

Problem: Scuffed linoleum

Solution: Rub the spot with white toothpaste and a dry cloth or with an eraser. Or spray WD-40 on a towel and rub lightly, making sure to degrease the area afterward with liquid dishwashing soap and water.

Problem: Dry cutting board

Solution: Revive your board by gently warming a bottle of pure mineral oil (available at drugstores) in a bowl of hot water, then wiping the oil onto the surface with a soft cloth. Wipe off the excess four to six hours later.

Problem: Stuck sliding windows

Solution: A little silicone spray lubricant (sold at hardware stores) will grease the skids. Spray it onto a rag, then wipe along the tracks, whether they're metal, wood, or plastic.

Problem: Flattened down cushions

Solution: Put them outside in the sun for a few hours, flipping them halfway through. (Be careful -- leaving them out too long may fade the fabric.) The sun will help evaporate the moisture that gets into the filling over time, and the cushions should plump up nicely

Problem: Dirty decanter

Solution: Fill the decanter halfway with hot water, a few drops of liquid dishwashing soap, two tablespoons of white vinegar, and a cup of uncooked rice. Swirl the rice around for a few minutes to remove the residue, rinse with hot water, and air-dry.

Problem: Tangled extension cords

Solution: Cowgirls and sailors alike know the benefits of storing ropes neatly coiled. Follow their lead and keep extension cords tangle-free and contained inside a large plastic bucket when they're not in use.

Problem: Peeling wallpaper

Solution: With a knife, smear wallpaper paste onto a piece of writing paper. Rub the paper against the underside of the peeling section. Press the wallpaper against the wall. Slide the writing paper out and smooth away bubbles with a clean cloth.

Problem: Worn caning

Solution: A little sagging over time is natural but reversible (insert Joan Rivers joke here). To tighten caning back up, use a sponge to wet the underside with warm water. Let dry slowly overnight. Repeat if necessary.

Problem: Dusty chandelier

Solution: Allow the fixture to cool. Wear a pair of white cotton gloves -- one dry, one dampened with glass cleaner. (For crystal, use one part rubbing alcohol to three parts distilled water.) Wipe each prism with the damp glove, then the dry one.

Problem: Hard-to-remove decals

Solution: Spray the decals and the surrounding areas with WD-40, lifting the edges to get underneath, if possible. Let sit, then gently scrape away the decal with the edge of a credit card. Degrease the tub with liquid dishwashing soap.

Problem: Hard-to-remove bulb

Solution: Press the center of a foot-long strip of duct tape onto the middle of the bulb. Fold each loose end in half so it sticks onto itself. Gripping each end between your thumb and index finger, give a counterclockwise twist to loosen the bulb.

Problem: Stained tub

Solution: Combine equal amounts of cream of tartar and baking soda with enough lemon juice to make a paste. Rub the mixture into the stain with your fingers or a soft cloth. Let sit for a half hour, then rinse well with water.

Getting on Board

Composite decking continues to grow,

but some contractors say the product still needs work.

Source: REMODELING Magazine

By David Zuckerman

Whatever your feelings on composite decking, it's here to stay. The category continues to grow, carving out a larger share of the multibillion-dollar decking market every year. But the pace of that growth has slowed: Where the early years of this decade saw annual market-share gains of 30% (in dollar terms), between 2005 and 2006 composites grew just 18% in dollar terms and in single digits in volume terms, according to John Pruett, area leader for building products at Principia Consulting. Pruett says much of the slowdown can be attributed to a rise in manufacturing costs — Hurricanes Katrina and Rita took out Gulf Coast resin facilities, which led to higher prices. But a rash of product failures and consumer complaints have hurt, too.

Today, manufacturers are offering a greater diversity of composite products than ever before, including different wood-grain looks, colors, railing systems, and accessories; but prices remain high, and many contractors have yet to warm to the material. Though the market for composite rail systems still has considerable room to grow, Pruett says, there is uncertainty about when composite decking will reach a saturation point.

Another key question, Pruett says, is how long building products conglomerates such as Dow, Alcoa, and CertainTeed will continue to compete with the pure play manufacturers that currently dominate the market. Last year, the top three composite manufacturers — Trex, TimberTech, and Fiber Composites — accounted for 53% of the value of the $1 billion composite market.

Manufacturers say that composite decks look better than ever, and homeowners are buying, but many remodelers say they still prefer wood.

HOW MUCH MAINTENANCE?

Composites made huge gains in the early part of the decade by selling consumers on the idea of a maintenance-free deck. That claim, however, proved unfounded: Composites need to be cleaned and, in moist climates, sealed to reduce mold growth. A class-action suit brought by four New Jersey households against Trex resulted in a settlement, the terms of which prohibit the manufacturer from using the phrase “maintenance-free” in its advertising, as well as from claiming that its decks require no sealant.

Manufacturers now readily admit that composite decks must be cleaned and are, depending on the environment in which they're built, susceptible to mold and mildew growth. “It's low-maintenance,” says Trex spokes-woman Maureen Murray. “It's certainly not going to prevent the need for cleaning. I don't think any product that's outdoors could do that.”

Paul Bizarri, vice president of research and development at Timber-Tech, says his company and other manufacturers have made substantial efforts to improve mold and mildew resistance, replacing oak wood flour — which in some cases contributed to mildew growth through the bleeding of tannins — with maple. At the same time, he says, an effort is under way to lower consumer expectations and better educate distributors, contractors, and homeowners about the conditions that promote mold and mildew growth — essentially any climate other than California or the desert West and Southwest — and how to treat growth that does occur. For example, gapping, Murray says, is essential “so debris and water can fall through. Otherwise they accumulate in those little crevices and create a food source for mold and mildew.”

BEND, DON'T BREAK

While mold and mildew might be the foremost concern for homeowners when it comes to composite decks, when you talk to contractors, the conversation doesn't end there. Though composites receive high marks for durability, many remodelers who regularly install them say these products still leave much to be desired, and fall short of wood in a number of areas including look, feel, malleability, and structural integrity.

“We really don't like composites, as a general rule,” says Chaden Halfhill, whose Des Moines, Iowa, company Silent Rivers is a full-service design/build firm that earned a reputation for its high-design decks. “We understand why it exists, but it's not as pleasant to use.”

As a designer, Halfhill finds that the physical properties of composites hinder his creativity because the boards are less easily manipulated to create custom details. “You can't do a horizontal detailing because you need a certain level of verticality for it to support its own weight. And it's a bit harder to manipulate the wood because if you cut it down, its integrity decreases. You're limited by the nature of the material. Structurally, it can only do certain things.”

Sean Leonard, a project manager at Silent Rivers, says he dislikes composites' weight and flexibility, which make the boards difficult to work with, particularly on a hot day when boards are even less rigid. In addition, Leonard says that the lesser structural integrity of composite boards has forced him to adjust some of his standard practices. For example, notching and counter-notching — standard when building posts and rails as well as elevated structures such as pergolas and arbors — actually weakens composite boards.

We like to picture frame [our decks] and then bring the post inside the deck a little ways,” Leonard says. “And if we have double rims, like a flush beam situation, we'll be notching out our posts to the thickness of one of those joists; but if it's a composite post, you can't do that. It's not strong enough. We almost never mount on the exterior of a deck, and we're always going to double, so we always seem to be running into that problem.”

Solutions tend to differ from project to project, Leonard says, depending on the project and the customer's budget and taste. Most recently, he says, creating a custom steel rail system for the deck solved the problem.

Manufacturers are looking to address those concerns, Bizarri says, but face the dual challenge of reducing the weight of composites without limiting structural integrity. Recently, TimberTech introduced chemical foaming — a process common in the plastics industry — to its manufacturing process to reduce the weight of its composite boards.

“Essentially, you're introducing more air into the same space, which lets your product be lighter,” Bizarri says, of the foaming process. “It does affect the structural properties, so the long-term objective is to find properties that are strong enough to meet the needs of the application.”

TimberTech engineers are also working to apply processes used to make the company's composite fencing products, including foaming and inserting metal rods into extruded boards for horizontal applications. “There are challenges with structural integrity, especially in horizontal components,” Bizarri says, “but adding a metal insert with an extrusion process has worked in our fencing, so that's a way we're attacking it.”

High expansion and contraction rates make gapping and joining composite boards unpredictable.

A LITTLE GAP GOES A LONG WAY

Other contractors have run into trouble with the contraction and expansion that composites undergo as a result of seasonal temperature changes. “Composites will expand in summer and contract in winter,” says Kansas City remodeler Dick DeVuyst, owner of high-end deck specialist Outdoor Environments. “The installation technique must account for that. You have to pay particular attention to the temperature when you install it. It makes a difference in how you gap your end joints and butt joints, and how you miter your trim.”

One deck specialist in the Midwest had so much trouble with extreme movement that he swore off composites entirely and now refuses to work with them. The contractor, who asked not to be named because he is still negotiating warranty settlements with several manufacturers, says he lost $250,000 over a two-year period warranting composite decks. One deck he says, “pushed so much that it flattened the downspout completely up against the house — it moved 2 or 3 inches. “If you're going to move a product 2 or 3 inches and it's in wood with nails, you know you're pulling joists and pulling nails and breaking fasteners. It's some major stuff.”

Though manufacturers specify gap widths based on installation temperatures, the remodeler says, different boards may be installed at different temperatures. “If you have a stack of synthetic lumber out in the driveway and the top has been heated by the sun but the bottom's cool from the concrete, and you're pulling it all down that day, every board you put down has a different temperature. So you can gap it all evenly, but when you put it down it expands or contracts different amounts.”

DeVuyst says that he only installs with one composite brand, Trex, because, after years of installing it, he knows how it will react to temperature changes. “I like to stick to one [product] because I know what it does. The worst thing for a contractor like us is to go out to a job two years later and find everything's all out of place because we didn't gap it right.”

Bizarri, acknowledging some of composite's early troubles, places the product somewhere in the middle of its development. “We've made a lot of improvements, and the product will continue to improve,” he says. “Frankly, this category is evolving, and will continue to evolve.”

Leonard, the Des Moines remodeler, for all his dissatisfaction with composites in their current state, says he has faith in the power of the market to force manufacturers to make a better product. “They're going to have to be competitive in the marketplace, or they're not going to be there.” —David Zuckerman writes frequently on construction topics from his home in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Bulk Material Calculator: Loam, Gravel, Sand, etc.

As part of a home improvement, remodel, renovation or landscaping project there may come a time when you need to buy materials such as sand, loam, earth or gravel in bulk.

As well, there are times that you need to know how many cubic feet of material you will need to complete a job, as many manufacturers and packagers of material will state that a bag has a certain amount of cubic feet of material in it.

This is especially common in landscaping and gardening. Most garden nurseries and landscaping centers will sell and deliver bulk materials by the cubic yard.

Calculating how many cubic yards of material you may need can be confusing to say the least and an error can be costly. Follow the link to get a free bulk material calculator that you can download onto your computer.

The formulas for calculating the volume of a square or rectangle and a circle are:

Square or Rectangle: Length x Width x Height = Cubic

Circle: 3.14 x Radius x Radius x Height = Cubic

All numbers must be in the same units, inches or feet. When entering values in feet remember that 6" is not 0.6 of a foot, it is 0.5 of a foot. As an example, a measurement of 10 feet 3 inches would be entered as 10.25 feet, as 3" is a 0.25 of a foot. A measurement of 6 feet 9 inches would be entered as 6.75 feet as 9" is 0.75 of a foot.

If you used inches in your calculation: to convert to cubic feet, divide by 1728, to convert to cubic yards, divide by 66,656.

If you used feet in your calculation: to convert to cubic yards, divide by 27.

Planning and knowledge are the keys to any successful home improvement, remodel or landscaping project!

LiTraCon - Light-Transmitting Concrete

Invented by Hungarian architect Áron Losonczi in 2001, LiTraCon is a mixture of thousands of optical fibers and fine concrete produced as precast building blocks and panels that are light-transmitting. LiTraCon rooms will be brightened and proximal objects situated on the brighter side of a LiTraCon wall will be revealed as silhouettes on the other side. Though the optical fibers compose only 4% of the concrete, some light is transmitted because of their parallel arrangement in a matrix between to the two outer surfaces of each block. Load-bearing structures can also be built from these blocks, since glass fibers have no negative effect on the strength of the concrete. The blocks come in various sizes and with an option of embedded heat-isolation. Since not everyone appreciates the look of exposed concrete, LitraCon is creating light-transmitting building blocks in other textures and colors as well.

lighthandle1.png

Presenting the Alfa Online and the Alfa Battery from Brighthandle. The handle indicates the room is occupied with a red light on the outside of the door when the thumb turn is activated. When the room is vacant there is a continuous green light on the outside. As the product indicates, the “Online” refers to hard wired, so power is always available. Where this option doesn’t exist, the “Battery” version is available and uses 2 R6 batteries. The difference with the Alfa Battery is it only turns red when the thumb turn is activated, otherwise it’s off to save on batter life. Public bathrooms, conference rooms, dressing are good examples of its application. Always on red emergency exits would also be a good idea…

How to Build a Monolithic Dome

Floor

Step One

The Monolithic Dome starts as a concrete ring foundation, reinforced with steel rebar. Vertical steel bars embedded in the ring later attached to the steel reinforcing of the dome itself. Small domes may use an integrated floor/ring foundation. Otherwise, the floor is poured after completion of the dome.

Airform

Step Two

An Airform -- fabricated to the proper shape and size -- is placed on the ring base. Using blower fans, it is inflated and the Airform creates the shape of the structure to be completed. The fans run throughout construction of the dome.

Foam

Step Three

Polyurethane foam is applied to the interior surface of the Airform. Entrance into the air-structure is made through a double door airlock which keeps the air-pressure inside at a constant level. Approximately three inches of foam is applied. The foam is also the base for attaching the steel reinforcing rebar.

Reinforcing Steel

Step Four

Steel reinforcing rebar is attached to the foam using a specially engineered layout of hoop (horizontal) and vertical steel rebar. Small domes need small diameter bars with wide spacing. Large domes require larger bars with closer spacing.

Shotcrete

Step Five

Shotcrete -- a special spray mix of concrete -- is applied to the interior surface of the dome. The steel rebar is embedded in the concrete and when about three inches of shotcrete is applied, the Monolithic Dome is finished. The blower fans are shut off after the concrete is set.
